English follows Japanese.
Welcome to the official student homepage of Jin Sato Laboratory! We introduce the members of the lab, provide articles written exclusively by the current and past students, and information on how to prepare for the entrance examinations.
The interests of the students in the Sato Lab are diverse, but can be broadly divided into four main areas: 1) research on global resource management, 2) research on qualitative methodologies for situation assessment and policy decision making, 3) social development and aid in developing countries, and 4) international cooperation and governance in the context of global environmental issues.
During every meeting, students are required to devise ways to make their presentations understandable and interesting to students with different specialties. Thus, the discussion provides an opportunity for students to learn from each other about how to formulate good research questions. In addition to student-lead research presentations, our members often set theme of interest and certain literatures for discussion.
We also have annual Summer Camps where students went to Ashio Copper Mine (FY 2018), Rikuzentakata (FY 2019), plus other intellectually stimulating and beautiful places in Japan to deepen their understanding of development studies. During the trip, through interaction with local people, the camp is always a very educational and fun experience.
In addition, the Sato Lab Reading Group, which began in August 2020, features book introductions by Dr. Sato, Sato Lab seminar students, and other outside participants on a voluntary basis. The reading group is held every week and has become a very lively place to share thoughts and encounter good books.
Our weekly meeting is held in person at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo. During two semesters in 2024 and 2025, the classes were also hybrid as Professor Jin was teaching remotely to Hongo’s students from Columbia University, New York, United States. The laboratory offers a constructive but very flexible learning environment where every student can create any research plan at our own pace.
Weekly Meeting Location:
