Returning to School After 13 Years: Why I Chose Sato Lab 🏫✨ 日本語訳あり

Hello everyone,

My name is Yuta Sato, and I completed my Master's degree in March 2025, graduating from the Jin Sato Laboratory. Before joining the lab, I was a working professional. In this column, I’d like to share my experience, particularly for those considering graduate studies at Sato Lab after gaining professional experience.

I graduated from university in 2010 and immediately joined a general company, where I worked for 13 years. In April 2023, I enrolled in the master's program and joined Jin Sato Laboratory. During my two years of master's studies, I was fortunate enough to take leave from my company through an available system. Initially, I had several concerns: halting my career path, financial challenges due to the absence of salary while supporting my family, and doubts about whether I could keep up academically, given my limited prior connection to academia. However, now that I have graduated, I can confidently say those worries were completely unfounded. My experience at Sato Lab was truly wonderful.

At Sato Lab, I encountered many students who, like myself, had professional experience before returning to academia, including both Master's and PhD candidates. This diversity is also a characteristic of the broader University of Tokyo environment, where many students enter graduate studies after gaining professional experience. Additionally, because many researchers (including professors) and individuals from research-related companies frequently visit the campus, my presence as an "older" student did not feel out of place at all!

During my undergraduate years, I was involved in the athletic baseball club and was not particularly engaged in academic pursuits. Moreover, my professional background was in sales and marketing within the electronics industry—an entirely different world from academia. Nonetheless, Sato Lab fosters an inclusive atmosphere, even welcoming research beginners like myself into active discussions. Seminar sessions provided a safe and collaborative environment where students from all academic years freely commented on and questioned each other's research presentations. When writing my master's thesis, my lab mates generously reviewed drafts and supported me through the entire process.

Through Professor Sato, I was introduced to professionals from companies aligned with my research interests. This connection eventually led to a new career opportunity in one of these companies.

Choosing to pause one's career and enter graduate school can indeed present psychological and financial challenges. Yet, the experiences and insights I gained at Sato Lab were invaluable, ones that I would never have acquired had I continued in my previous role. I hope this blog entry offers encouragement and motivation to others considering a similar path.

「13年のキャリアから大学院へ：佐藤研で得た学び」

“From Industry to Academia: My Journey at Jin Sato Laboratory”

皆さま、こんにちは。

2025年3月に修士課程を修了し、佐藤仁研究室を卒業した佐藤雄太と申します。私は社会人を経て佐藤研に入りました。そこで、このコラムでは同じく社会人で佐藤研に興味を持たれている方を意識して、私の経験をお話しさせていただきます。

私は大学を卒業した2010年に新卒で一般企業へ入社し、13年間働いた後の2023年4月に修士課程に入学し佐藤研の門を叩きました。

修士課程の2年間は会社の制度を利用して休職をすることができましたが、それまで働いてきたキャリアをストップさせること、（給与がなくなるため）家族がいるなか金銭的に生活は大丈夫なのか、アカデミアに縁のなかった自分が大学院での研究についていけるのか、など入学する前には不安になる要素がありました。しかし、卒業した今言えることは、それらはまったくの杞憂であり、素晴らしい時間を佐藤研で過ごすことができたという実感です。

佐藤研には修士課程だけでなく博士課程の学生を含め、社会人を経験したのちに大学院に入学した学生がいました。また東京大学の雰囲気の一つでもありますが、佐藤研以外にも社会人になってから大学院に来る方も多く、また、キャンパスには研究者（先生含む）や研究関連の企業の方が多くいるため、“おじさん”の私がキャンパスにいること自体は意外と悪目立ちしませんでした（笑）。

また私は学部時代には体育会野球部に所属しており、アカデミアにコミットしていた学生ではありませんでした。また、企業で働いている間もエレクトロニクス業界でセールスマーケティング業務に従事しており、アカデミアとは無縁の世界でした。しかし、佐藤研では私のような研究の初心者に対してもオープンな雰囲気があり、皆の議論に参加できます。またゼミでの行われる各自の研究発表に対しては、ゼミ生の先輩、同期、後輩関係なく皆がコメントや質問を言い合え、とても安心して研究ができる環境です。修士論文の執筆においても、原稿をチェックし合い、論文を書き上げることをサポートしてくれました。

佐藤先生を通じて、私は自分の研究や興味関心と重なりのある企業の方と知り合うことができました。そしてご縁があって、そちらの企業に転職することになりました。

キャリアを止めて大学院に入学することは心理的にも経済的にもハードルが高い場合もあるかと思います。それでも、そのまま同じ業務をして働いていたら決して得られることができなかった経験や知見を、佐藤研で得られることができました。私のブログが、そのような方の後押しに少しでもなれば幸いです。
